Kucukcekmece Internal-External Sand Zone Project
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality organized an international contest last year for Kucukcekmece-Avcilar Internal-External Urban Transformation Project and the architect Ken Yeang’s team was awarded with the first prize. Having the prime goal of providing maximum social, economic and physical convenience about the environment, a balanced settlement, that considers the structure of the society and sensitive to the environment, would be built.
A corridor will be formed in north-south axis with the project, which would put under control the northward unbalanced development and would protect the ecologic balance. Considering the earthquake risk of the project field, buildings were proposed to be built independent of each other. As of urban functional fields, a central building and a sport complex will be built in Avcilar section and a culture center and residential areas in Kucukcekmece section with entertainment, educational ‘Eco World’ and aquarium [attractions] to address to a wider mass.
Other residential buildings are proposed to be both in the north and the south of traditional center of Kucukcekmece. A tourism complex will be built in Bakirkoy direction that would contain a marina, a yacht club, a museum and a 7-start hotel. Sea shores are to be redesigned for better use of public. While keeping the environment factor before the eyes, providing a better circulation between sea and lake with the new drainage channels are proposed.
Project proposes a new crossroad in E-5 traffic axle while considering the highway that would be connected in from north. Light metro route and a metro station in the central field are proposed. Continuity of pedestrian roads also carries importance in the project. The continuity of pedestrian circulation through the green straps on E-5 is also provided.
