FIREFIGHTING VOLUNTEERS
36.345 fire-related incidents occurred in Istanbul in 2007. 25.319 of these were fire incidents and 981 of these incidents were other accidents, mainly traffic accidents. Besides loss of lives and injuries resulting from fires and accidents, there are many serious economical losses. The most important work to do in order to decrease the number of fires and accidents, which are results of carelessness, incautiousness, negligence and not abiding by the rules, is education. Through decreasing the number of incidents by education and learning the appropriate behavior patterns, it will be possible to prevent injuries and loss of lives.
One of the most serious obstacles to our effective work as the Istanbul Fire Department in the face of the incidents is the incorrect interference of the people nearby. In addition to that, the insensible interference of uneducated people in the accidents causes irreversible injuries and permanent disabilities in casualties.
Besides the frequency of the accidents at home and in the environment and the dangers our children face, the improper interference of parents, too, results in serious injuries and loss of lives.
Within the framework of “The Firefighting Volunteers Project”, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Fire Head of Department has been working to educate and employ Fire Brigade Volunteers in 957 neighborhoods, to train them about the correct response and right behaviour patterns in the face of incidents in order to prevent fire incidents and accidents in 2008.
Your reeves will create teams of 11 persons. Each neighbourhood will have at least 3 teams, but this number may be increased if there is more application from the neighbourhoods with dense population. To start with, it is our aim to train 31.581 fire brigade volunteers to perform duty in 2.871 teams in 957 neighbourhoods, county municipalities in Istanbul, in units of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and its associations.
The aim of the project is;
1- To raise awareness of the possible precautions in the fire brigade volunteers and neighbourhood residents before the incidents of fire, accident and disaster (earthquakes, floods).
2- To raise awareness in the fire brigade volunteers about the correct behaviour patterns in the face of fire, accident and disaster and to convey the gained information to the residents of the neighbourhood.
3- To enable the fire brigade volunteers to prepare for the Fire Brigade Teams an appropriate environment for response as soon as they arrive, to take action if necessary and to co-operate with the teams under their command. The objective is to decrease the loss of lives and properties to minimum in big fires and natural disasters by responding in a shorter time.
4- To enable coordination in major disasters, the effective use of the resources and to not allow any disorder in the scenes of accidents.
Within the scope of this project, Fire Brigade Volunteers are given theoretical and practical training lessons in their 1. and 2. course trainings about the issues shown in the table in the attachment
