Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık commemorated, a year after his death…

On the first-year anniversary of his death, Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık, a world-renowned Turkish historian has been commemorated upon his grave in Fatih Mosque cemetery of Istanbul.

Dr. İbrahim Kalın, Deputy Secretary General and Spokesperson of the Presidency Ambassador delivered a speech during the ceremony, and said,  “As a young man and a student who studied history, I always admired and was impressed by the depth of Inalcik’s erudition. He was not only an expert on Turkish Ottoman History, but also a giant historian who placed Turkish Ottoman History in world history in a very convincing and elegant fashion. He often said that you would not write European and World history without understanding Ottoman History. He himself confirmed this statement by his own works. He was also a great historian who benefited from many different branches of science such as anthropology, politics, diplomatic, poetry, archeology and political science.”

Speaking at the ceremony, his daughter Günhan İnalcık said: “This looks a perfect burial site that suits his name. I am very content with it. Being a daughter of him makes me more proud each passing day. I miss him dearly. His memory is everywhere. His name is name is commemorated everywhere. Because of that I am very proud and happy. That's what my father would have wanted.”

A special order was given to create a tomb above his grave in the traditional style of the Ottoman Ulama scholars, which was was carried out and completed yesterday by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey. His tomb commemorates his expansive knowledge and works in the field of Ottoman history.

Professor Halil İnalcık had passed away at the age of 100 last year in Ankara where he had been receiving medical treatment. İnalcık died of multiple organ failure and buried on July 28, 2016.

He was born in Istanbul in 1916, İnalcık graduated from the Department of History in the Faculty of Language, History, and Geography at Ankara University in 1940. He completed his doctoral degree at his alma mater in 1943 and started working as an assistant in the same department before becoming a professor in 1952.

İnalcık lectured at many universities including Princeton (1967) and Harvard (1992) as a visiting professor in the U.S. From 1972 to 1993, he taught Ottoman history at the University of Chicago. He gave various seminars and conferences in Turkey and abroad.

İnalcık published numerous books and articles on Ottoman history. He was a member and president of many international organizations, as well as the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Historical Sciences and the Institute of Turkish Studies. He was also a founding member of the Eurasian Academy. He received many honorary doctorates and awards.
