Selamettin Ermiş He was born in Sinop on June 23, 1968. After completing his elementary education in the district of Durağan in Sinop Province, he was enrolled in the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Bilkent University in Ankara, in 1987. He studied English for one year at the preparatory class of the Foreign Languages School and graduated in 1992. He started his career as a clerk in the Foreign Relations Department in Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) in 1994. He was in charge of relations with international institutions and cities in America and Middle East. He attended and took role in the organizations of International Youth Forum by METROPOLIS, of which IMM is a member, 61st Council Meeting and General Conference of International Federation of Library Unions, and HABITAT II activities which were held in 1996. He worked in the Department of Fire Brigade between 1996 and 2003 and became the Chief of Promotion and Foreign Relations. After completing international courses; NFPA(National Fire Protection Association) 1033 organized by Mississippi Fire Academy in Jackson- Mississippi, the USA, with a great success, he became the first person in Turkey holding the certificate of “Fire Investigator”. He made some contributions to the founding of the Federation of Balkan Fire Brigade Sports and participated in many meetings and organizations which took place in Istanbul and many Balkan cities. He contributed to the close relations between the Fire Brigades of Turkish and Balkan countries as well as to the establishment of Turkish Union of fire fighters. He became a delegate and in charge of international relations of the mentioned union . He was involved in the preparation activities of the Union of Volunteer Fire Fighters to be the first one of its kind in Turkey. He was in charge of the organization of a large meeting about the establishment of ‘Eurasian Union of Fire Brigades’ held between November 15-16, 2002 with the participation of senior officials and General Directors of Fire Departments of Greece, Bulgaria, FYROM, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan in the leadership of Turkish Fire Brigades Union. Furthermore, he became the editor of a magazine published by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality- Department of Fire Brigade and Fire Brigade Foundation and distributed throughout Turkey, also translating some articles for this magazine. He was assigned as Deputy Director of Foreign Relations in charge of administrative affairs and international organizations on May 29, 2003. During his tenure, he worked in the municipal preparations of many international meetings and organizations such as Metropolis Board of Directors Meeting, Japan Week jointly organized by IMM-IFF (International Friendship Foundation); NATO Summit. During the preparations of European Cities against Drugs (ECAD) Board of Directors Meeting in 2007 and 4th World Mayors’ Summit which will take place in Spring 2007, he was appointed as the Director of Foreign Relations on September 3, 2006. He is married with two children, speaks fluent English and intermediate Arabic.
