In the Ottoman era the name of institution that carried out the municipal services was called Şehremaneti.
But there is no any similarity between the old Şehremaneti and its contemporary institution. The old şehremaneti was not an office but was an officer.
Şehremini (Mayor) were residing in Yalı Kosk (large wooden house) ans Sepetçiler Summer Palace.
The old Şehremaneti was abolished in 1831. Şehremaneti that had similarity with today's mayorship was founded in 1855 in Beyoglu in 6th Mayorship Building.
This building was a modern municipal building designed at that period.
Buildings of Fatih and Kadıköy Municipalities were also among well designed buldings.
Şehremaneti used the building for along time where the Municipality of Eminönü stays at the moment.
The Municipal House of the Municipality of Metropolitan Istanbul is located in Şehzadebaşı, where the Ataturk Boulevard and Şehzadebaşı Street is intersected.
