Objectives and Operations
The “Halk Ekmek” or People’s Bread Corp.’s initial phase started in February of 1971. After the legal formalities were met the necessary machinery and equipment were imported. Due to some problems and misfortunes the bread production could not start until 26 August 1978.
The People’s Bread Corp’s objectives are meeting the Istanbul citizens demand for cheap and quality bread and other bakery in a regular service of production, distribution and also establishment of related facilities. Especially the demand of low-income Istanbul citizens for cheap and sanitary bread is taken into consideration in the company’s operations. Besides meeting this demands the People’s Bread also acts as a regulator for prices in the bakery market behalf of the customers.
Goals Achieved so Far:
Increasing production from 240,000 loaves on 27th March 1994 to 1,600,000 loaves of bread today.
Old machinery & equipment is renovated and maintained; new machinery and equipment purchased.
The “bread kiosks” numbers rose from a 1198 to some 1497.
Some by-operations are transferred to subcontractors, which brought savings up to 30 billion TL. All debts of the former service term to state offices, the Social Security Organization,

trade unions and dealers have been paid; there are no new debts. A loss/turnover rate of 33% in 1993 came down to a 3.58% in 1995; with no loss in 1996.
A production/personnel rate of 240,000 loaves / 460 personnel rose to a 850,000 loaves / 483 personnel. The market share rose from 6% to 22% whereas facility number rose to 3, and production lines to 12.
All system has been computerized modernizing company management.

There are 3 production facilities with the central facility in Edirnekapı, and branch facilities in Kartal and Cebeci.

Special Diet Starch Bread:
The People’s Bread now starts production of a special diet bread for patients suffering from coeliac disease and Phenylketonuria.
In cooperation with the Dept. Of Infant Health and the Dept.
Of Metabolism and Nutritional Health, Fac. Of Medicine in Cerrahpaşa, Istanbul University, the People’s Bread Corp. Produces a special sort of diet bread poor in protein. Good for many metabolism disease patients, this sort of bread was brand named “the Special Diet and Starch Bread”

The main characteristics of this bread is its being poor in protein and Phenylalanin and its lack of gluten. The flour of this bread was to be found in pharmacies for prices of USD 20 a kg before People’s Bead started business and now a 450 gr.
Loaf is sold at 30 cents. Macaronis, biscuits and cakes of this special brand is also projected.
Diseases the Special Diet Starch Bread is good for:
Coeliac disease
Phenylketonuria
Other metabolic diseases: Thyrosinemia, Homocystinuria, the urea cycle defects (5 diseases), organic acidemias (50 diseases)
Liver diseases associated with hyperammonemia
Chronic kidney diseases associated with hyperuremia in treating these diseases the use of low protein food is a must.

Quality And Healthy Service At Reasonable Price
The people’s Bread is established by the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul so as to provide the citizens with better bread at lower prices. Low-income people being squeezed under high inflation thank the company for their diminishing budget deficits. Besides there is also a rise in quality standards in the bakery market.
Moreover the People’s Bread is also intended to form a conscious customer abolishing the wasted 2 million loafs of bread daily throughout Istanbul which constitute a horrible scene under today’s economic conditions. “Loaf is labor”; labor that earns bread, so wasting is wrong. The People’s Bread also makes publications to increase consciousness of the customer.
Investments
The Istanbul People’s Bread Corp. In her efforts to serve Istanbul’s citizens better and cheaper made new investments to raise her production capacity and modernize her facilities.
The Edirnekapı facility has been enlarged by adding two new production lines. New facilities of 4 production lines have been opened up in Kartal and Cebeci.
The Edirnekapı Central Facility’s 4 production lines have been renovated.
As other companies of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul do, the People’s Bread rushed for help to disaster areas showing her solidarity with the nation. Aid done between 17th August 1999 and 1st February 2000 are distribution of bread in 1,916,741 loaves in Adapazarı,

3,062,975 in Kocaeli, 2,592,185 in Gölcük, 1,264,866 in Bolu/Düzce, 3,086,900 in Yalova, 150,760 in Kullar, 438,650 in Derince, 26,000 in Döngel, 639,960 in Körfez, 31,000 in Erenler, 11,000 in Serdivan and 792,000 in disaster areas in Istanbul, totalling to some 14,416,326.
