TOWN MUNICIPALITIES

Town municipalities are founded with Reference law of the Municipality Act of 1960 (No. 1580). 

Municipalities are established in the settlements of more than 2,000 inhabitants, and in the provincial and district centres regardless of their populations.

In the settlements with more than 2,000 inhabitants, village council or at least half of the voters should apply by an inscription to the governor in charge, or the governor should see this necessary on his own discretion. Elections are called in the village upon this application or necessity. The provincial council decides whether the revenues of the municipality to be established is sufficient enough to carry out the duties assigned to municipalities by legislation or whether the establishment of the municipality will be appropriate.
